Malaria and its prevention in pregnancy in Uganda

In eastern Uganda, in the area of Fort Portal, malaria in pregnancy an apparently increasing problem. Pregnant women show an increased rate of malaria episodes despite intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) and the provision of insecticide treated bet nets.

lCauses, extent, and consequences of the increased malaria risk are examined among antenatal care attendees and delivering women in Fort Portal. Central to the project are the determination of molecular markers of SP resistance and on the assessment of the actual use of preventive measures. The project ultimately aims at the optimization of preventive measures for pregnant women.
